About Elevit DHA & Choline Pregnancy:
DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid which is essential for healthy brain and central nervous system development. DHA isn’t something we can naturally produce much of; therefore, it must be obtained through diet or supplementation. While DHA can be obtained through diet by eating oily fish and seafood products, many women don’t eat the recommended serves of these types of foods, that’s why we developed Elevit DHA & Choline Pregnancy.
Choline is an essential nutrient that is required by the body for many steps in metabolism, cell formation and repair, it is not made in adequate quantities by the body and must be obtained through diet. The need for choline increases in pregnancy as it plays an important role in a baby’s early brain development, as well as supporting maternal placenta health.
Choline is found in food sources such as red meat, poultry, fish, dairy products and eggs11,12, however it can be difficult to meet the recommended levels required for pre-conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding with just diet alone, especially as some women have restrictive diets. The first 1000 days of a baby's life, from conception to their 2nd birthday, is a critical period for brain and nervous system development. While DHA & Choline plays a key role in this, most pregnant and breastfeeding women do not get enough of these important nutrients through diet alone as they can be cautious about eating fish during this time or may have diet restrictions.
During pre-conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, it is recommended to supplement to reach adequate levels of DHA & choline and in turn support your growing baby.
While there is no recommended daily intake (RDI) for DHA (alone) in pregnancy, local and international guidelines recognise that it is an important nutrient during pre-conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, and that many women may not obtain enough from food sources. The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends that pregnant women get around 110 -115mg/day of total fats (DHA+EPA+DPA)1. The European Food Safety Authority recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women take 100-200mg DHA per day, in addition to recommendations for healthy adults (200mg is roughly equivalent to one tin of tuna (95g))6.
The recommended daily intake (RDI) levels for choline are 415 mg / 440 mg in pregnancy (women 14-18 / 19-50) to 550mg in lactating women.11,12

It is intended to be taken in addition to Elevit Preconception & Pregnancy Multivitamin, however as Elevit Breastfeeding also contains 200mg DHA the two products should not be taken together. It can be added to the diet based on individual needs.
